Virgin Media M125 offers an average 132Mbps download speed, 20Mbps upload speed and a minimum guaranteed download speed of 66Mbps to the Hub.
It is Virgin Media’s lowest-speed standard package, but it is fast enough for smaller households that browse, stream in 4K, work from home and play games online. Choose M250 if several people regularly stream, download or use the connection heavily at the same time.
The main limitation is the 20Mbps upload speed. Consider a faster Virgin Media package or a symmetrical full-fibre service if large cloud backups and file uploads form part of your daily internet use.

M125 is available as broadband only, with a home phone or with Flex TV. The broadband speed remains the same, so the decision depends on whether the household will use the additional services.

M125 offers enough bandwidth for a household with several connected devices, but the activities taking place matter more than the total device count.

A fixed device number does not guarantee performance. Nine idle devices use little bandwidth, while two devices downloading large files can consume most of the connection.
M125 is therefore best for moderate internet use rather than a specific number of phones, televisions or computers.

M125 speeds and minimum guarantee
Download performance
The average 132Mbps download speed gives a smaller household enough bandwidth for everyday broadband use. Streaming a 4K programme normally consumes only part of the available connection, leaving capacity for browsing, video calls and other devices.
M125 is also fast enough for online gaming. Gameplay uses relatively little bandwidth, although downloading a new game or a major update will take longer than on M250, M350 or M500.
Moving to a faster package becomes worthwhile when large downloads regularly compete with streaming, calls and other busy devices. Faster broadband will not correct poor Wi-Fi coverage, an old device or high latency to a distant game server.
Upload performance
M125 offers an average 20Mbps upload speed. This is sufficient for routine video calls, sending photographs, gaming and uploading ordinary documents.
The limitation becomes clearer with large video files, extensive photo libraries and automatic cloud backups. An upload can also consume much of the available capacity and affect calls or gaming elsewhere in the home.
M250 increases the upload speed to 25Mbps, while M350 offers 36Mbps. A symmetrical full-fibre alternative offers a much larger improvement for households that regularly send substantial amounts of data.
Virgin Media also offers a paid symmetrical upload add-on in selected XGS-PON areas. The option increases the upload speed until it is equal to the download speed, but it is unavailable over DOCSIS cable.
Minimum guaranteed download speed
M125 comes with a minimum guaranteed download speed of 66Mbps to the Virgin Media Hub. This measures the broadband connection reaching the router, not the speed recorded over Wi-Fi on a phone or laptop.
If the connection remains below 66Mbps for three consecutive days, report the problem to Virgin Media. You can leave the contract without paying an early disconnection charge if Virgin Media cannot correct it within 30 days.
Wireless interference, thick walls, router placement and device limitations can reduce Wi-Fi speeds even when the broadband line meets its guarantee.
M125 router and WiFi Max
Virgin Media delivers M125 through DOCSIS cable in established network areas and XGS-PON full fibre in newer expansion areas. The connection determines the type of Hub that can be installed.
Cable-area Hubs
Cable M125 does not guarantee a Hub 5. Virgin Media can supply a Hub 3, Hub 4 or Hub 5 according to the equipment allocated to the order.
Hub 3 and Hub 4 use Wi-Fi 5, while Hub 5 adds Wi-Fi 6 and a faster 2.5Gbps Ethernet port. Every model has enough wired capacity for the 132Mbps broadband connection, but the newer Hub offers better wireless technology.
Do not choose cable M125 on the assumption that a Wi-Fi 6 Hub will be included. Check the router information during the order if the Hub model matters.
Hub 5x in full-fibre areas
XGS-PON installations use the Hub 5x. It offers Wi-Fi 6, one 10Gbps Ethernet port and three Gigabit Ethernet ports.
The Hub 5x does not currently include Virgin Media’s official modem mode. Customers planning to use a separate router or mesh system should consider this restriction before ordering.

WiFi Max
WiFi Max is not included with standalone M125. It is available as a paid extra and is included when M125 forms part of a Volt package.
The service offers a minimum 30Mbps Wi-Fi download speed in every room, subject to its exclusions. Virgin Media can supply up to three WiFi Pods after completing its diagnostic process.
A one-off £100 bill credit applies if all three Pods fail to achieve the guaranteed room speed after the required checks. This is separate from the 66Mbps broadband guarantee to the Hub.
Installation options
QuickStart self-installation is available at cable premises that already have a suitable Virgin Media connection. Virgin Media sends the Hub and cables for connection to the existing wall socket.
A new cable connection or an XGS-PON installation requires an engineer. QuickStart is unavailable for full-fibre installations using the Hub 5x.
M125 alternatives
M125 and M250 are the most direct comparison. Other providers become more attractive when full fibre, faster uploads or newer router equipment is available locally.

Choose M250 when the price difference is small and the household regularly uses several bandwidth-intensive services at once.
BT and Plusnet offer faster standard uploads over the Openreach full-fibre network. Hyperoptic and Community Fibre offer equal download and upload speeds, but their availability is limited to their network areas.

Is M125 fast enough for 4K streaming?
Yes. M125 has enough bandwidth for 4K streaming alongside browsing, video calls and other everyday activity.
Several simultaneous 4K streams combined with large downloads can use a substantial proportion of the connection. M250 or M350 is better for households that regularly use broadband in this way.
Does M125 include a landline?
The broadband-only package does not include a landline. A separate M125 broadband and phone package includes a digital home phone service and an inclusive calls plan.
Home phone service is unavailable in some XGS-PON expansion areas. The postcode check confirms whether the phone package can be ordered.
Is WiFi Max included with M125?
Standalone M125 does not include WiFi Max. Customers can add it as a paid monthly service, while Volt packages include it.
WiFi Max offers up to three WiFi Pods and a minimum 30Mbps Wi-Fi download speed in every room, subject to the required checks and exclusions.
Will I receive a Hub 5 with M125?

M125 customers connected through XGS-PON full fibre receive the Hub 5x.
Does the 66Mbps guarantee apply over Wi-Fi?
No. The 66Mbps minimum guaranteed download speed applies to the broadband connection reaching the Virgin Media Hub.
A lower result over Wi-Fi can result from the device, distance, walls, interference or router position. WiFi Max has a separate room-to-room guarantee.
